Dry Needling and Electrical Dry Needling

At Boise Physical Therapy 180 we use dry needling to address myofascial restrictions or muscle trigger points (MTRP) where a fine gauge acupuncture needle is inserted into the muscle tissue. MTRP’s can cause pain, weakness, and decreased ROM and are associated with hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and decreased blood flow to the affected muscle. Dry needling has been shown to immediately increase an individual’s pain threshold and ROM, decrease muscle tone, and decrease pain. There is a growing body of evidence supporting our use of dry needling. A few mechanisms of action have been proposed for the efficacy of dry needling including a local twitch response, effects on blood flow, and neurophysiological effects. 

Upon insertion the acupuncture needle may cause a local muscle contraction via a spinal reflex, which then will cause the affected muscle to relax. Blood flow may also be involved whereby the inserted needle causes perfusion of the hypoxic muscle via vasodilation. It is also thought that dry needling may cause both local and central neurophysiological responses, causing a desensitization to pain. 

Besides MTRP’s, at Boise Physical Therapy 180 we use dry needling to treat tendinopathies, arthritis, chronic pain, low back pain, sprains and strains, and fibromyalgia. Our physical therapists are also trained in electrical dry needling, whereby two needles are inserted and used for passing electrical current. Low and high frequencies are used for various conditions. Low frequency dry needling is performed to address muscle atrophy and weakness while high frequency dry needling is used to address spasticity and muscle spasm
