Therapeutic Taping

Therapeutic taping is often used as an adjunct or temporary technique to manage pain and support anatomical structures and is widely used from high level athletes to your weekend warrior. The tape can provide mechanical, neuromuscular, and psychological benefits that help aid in the recovery process. At Boise Physical Therapy 180 we use therapeutic taping:

  • Restrict the movement of injured joints
  • Reduce swelling and inflammation
  • Improve blood flow and circulation
  • Inhibit or facilitate muscles
  • Prevent and relieve muscle spasms and cramping
  • Improve muscle tone and strength
  • Provide biofeedback and promote proprioception, aka your body’s ability to sense movement, location, or position.
  • Protect from re-injury

Depending on the tape, it can stay in place for several days or weeks. There are two types of tape that are commonly used: Kinesiotape and Leukotape. Kinesiotape is a thin, stretchy tape that imitates the skin’s elasticity, making it feel very natural. Leukotape is a firmer, non-stretchy tape that we use to support or limit movement. We are trained to use both types of tape to help treat a variety of conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Shin Splints
  • Posterior Tibialis Tendonitis
  • Patellar Dysfunction
  • Ligament Injuries
  • ITB syndrome
  • Back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Neck pain
  • Elbow, hand, or wrist injuries
