IASTM evolved from Gua Sha, which has been utilized in Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. IASTM is a form of manual therapy derived from deep friction massage with the intent of improving mobility of ligament, tendon, muscle, myofascial, and scar tissue restrictions. Adhesions can develop for a variety of reasons, especially following surgery or immobilization, but also from tissue overuse/overtraining and general deconditioning or immobility. At Boise Physical Therapy 180 we apply IASTM with beveled stainless steel or stone tools using a scraping or stroking technique. The ergonomic design of the tools allows the therapist to identify the affected tissue and provide deeper pressure than using hands-on techniques alone.
The introduction of controlled microtrauma to affected soft tissue structures causes a local inflammatory response and improves circulation. Microtrauma initiates reabsorption of inappropriate scar tissue and facilitates healing and remodeling of tissue. Adhesions within the soft tissue which may have developed because of surgery, immobilization, repeated strain or other mechanisms, are broken down allowing for improved tissue function. Conditions that may benefit from IASTM include tendinopathies (Achilles tendonitis), plantar fasciitis, heel pain, lateral and medial epicondylitis, fractures, post-operative or traumatic scars, ITB syndrome, and shin splints. Like the other forms of manual therapy we use at Boise Physical Therapy 180, IASTM can improve pain perception, improve ROM and joint mobility and increase connective tissue and muscle elasticity.
