Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) is a form of electrical stimulation that utilizes varying, low levels of current to impact specific tissues in your body. Its purpose is to promote healing and decrease pain while being specific to the painful area. Each tissue in the body emits its own frequency, and depending on the affected tissue, we can choose a specific frequency to address that area. While traditional TENS and IFC electrical stimulation are helpful in temporarily blocking pain signals, FSM can impact the production of ATP (cellular energy), reduce inflammation, and speed tissue healing depending on the frequency used. It encourages natural healing of the body in a non-invasive way.
We at Boise Physical Therapy 180 use FSM to directly treat a variety of conditions including chronic pain, tendinopathies, myofascial pain and trigger points, nerve pain, osteoarthritis, post-operative pain, sprains and strains from sports injuries, tendon and ligament injury, tension headache, and promote wound healing among many other conditions.
The process itself is pain-free, and you may not even feel the current. You may feel warmth and softening of the affected tissues that will help with lasting pain relief. Before being treated with FSM, it is important that you are well hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids leading up to your appointment to get the best results.
