Electrical Stimulation

Electrical Stimulation at Boise Physical Therapy 180

At Physical Therapy 180, we utilize advanced clinical electrical stimulation to calm pain, reduce swelling, improve circulation, and re-educate muscles to contract correctly. It is a completely non-invasive, safe, and comfortable treatment that typically lasts just 10 to 15 minutes per session.

Depending on your specific injury or recovery goals, our therapists will select from three primary types of electrical modalities:

  1. Interferential Current (IFC): Targeting Pain & Inflammation

IFC utilizes comfortable electrical energy to stimulate the nerves beneath the skin. By adjusting the frequencies, we can achieve two vital healing responses:

  • High-Frequency (Pain Relief): Creates an immediate “analgesic” or numbing effect by stimulating sensory nerves to safely block pain signals before they reach the brain.
  • Low-Frequency (Swelling Reduction): Gently stimulates motor nerves to encourage localized blood flow and assist the lymphatic system in clearing away stubborn swelling and edema.
  • Commonly Used For: Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain, sciatica, disc herniations, spinal stenosis, and post-surgical pain.
  1. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES): Rebuilding Muscle Strength

Following a major injury or surgery, muscles can experience “neurological inhibition”—meaning the brain temporarily forgets how to signal the muscle to contract. NMES uses specialized medium frequencies to gently force those dormant muscles to wake up and contract.

  • Post-Surgical Success: We frequently utilize NMES after knee arthroscopies and ACL reconstructions. It is highly effective at helping patients retrain and activate the VMO (the critical inner quadricep muscle responsible for dynamic knee stability) when they cannot contract it independently.

What Does E-Stim Feel Like?

Electrical stimulation should never be painful! Your therapist will always customize the intensity so that it feels comfortable to you:

  • Higher frequencies feel like a gentle, soothing tingling or buzzing sensation over the skin.
  • Lower frequencies feel like a rhythmic, localized tapping or beating sensation as the muscle gently pulses.
